Can you make a podcast for nothing? And should you?

First off, the obvious answer is no. You need a computer or, at the very least, some device with a microphone, not to mention internet for uploading and electricity for powering the whole thing. The idea of spending $0.00 is so obviously a myth that it’s not even worth taking on those terms. So the following few paragraphs will work from an assumption that you own a computer and a mobile telephone, and are already paying your internet and electricity bills. It will presume that you are a functional technologically proficient adult in the 21st century — and that your presence here on Medium is not because you are looking over someone’s shoulder on the subway.

So, with that all said, can you make a podcast for nothing?

Yes, I reckon you can. Use the onboard microphone on your computer or phone (you can even do multitrack recording with a buddy if you each have a device) as your basic recording system. The microphone on the iPhone, for example, is a lot better now than $50 USB microphones were 5-years ago, and I assume that other smartphones are the same. You can use free software like Zoom or Skype (or even free trials of software like Zencastr) to do group recordings from separate locations (which may even be preferable with limited technology, and make your edit a bit calmer).
